Are You Leaving It Up To Luck?

​Last Friday was Friday the 13th and today is St. Patty’s Day - funny to have 2 superstitious holidays so close! I had a lot of fun reading all kinds of great superstitions my facebook peeps shared with me. Whether you believe in them or not, there are many things we can do to not leave our lives up to sheer luck. Take a look at some of these “success-producing” behaviors (hint, these are all a part of GRIT).
  1. Be self-aware. Take the time to think about how you’re feeling and what you’re thinking. Consider what you really want in life.
  2. Accept the way you are (what you’re thinking, feeling and doing). Change if you want to. Believe you can do it.
  3. Go for it. Take the steps to make it happen. Create systems for yourself to stay aligned. When you fall off track, brush yourself off and get back on.
  4. Be good to yourself. Rest when you need to. Turn off those ‘unhelpful’ voices. Ask for help.
  5. Have fun. Create opportunities for humor and laughter. Celebrate along the way  - don’t wait for the final goal. Enjoy every moment of it - the struggles, the pain, the joy! It’s all a part of the life you’re creating.
The best definition of luck that I’ve heard is when you’re prepared and opportunity knocks!
So although we can’t control everything in life, we can do our best to prepare and be open to opportunities.

On the other hand, there are those who use their bad luck as an excuse. A long-time client of mine in the architectural field was asking me about when people use luck as an excuse, and how damaging it can be, and he never knows how to respond.
