Here's to 2016!

Updated: Oct 4, 2019

Although it doesn’t have to be a new year to decide to make a change, why not use it as an opportunity to take a look at something in your life that you’d like to change? I’ve heard a few comments lately about “that time of year again when people make commitments they’ll never keep…”. I say hey, at least you try! So don’t let that negative talk stop you from taking a step in the right direction.

Pause for a moment today and reflect on your life. (If you watched Scrooged with Bill Murray this Christmas season, you’ll know why it’s a good idea!) Start by thinking about the things that are going right and that you’re grateful for. Then take a moment to remember the changes you’ve made in the past and be proud of yourself. Finally, consider what is nagging at you, or something that you are not happy with, or just something that if you tweaked it, it might make a positive difference. And/or maybe it’s time to set a goal. Is there something you’ve been wanting to do but haven’t committed to yet? A trip somewhere, a dance class, a project or hobby you’d like to start?

Whatever it is, go for it! Put it into motion. Here are a few tips to help:

  1. Some of us need to start with thinking about it, to incubate it; to visualize it. Take a moment to consider why it’s important to you. (If thinking about it hasn’t set things in motion for you in the past, I recommend you spend less time here and more time in action).

  2. Change it from a dream to a goal. Set a date. Put tasks and dates on your calendar.

  3. Keep positive and happy when thinking about. Pour positive energy into it - it will flow more easily. (Put a song in your head - like Sheryl Crow’s ♬ I think a change, will do you good ♫)

  4. Don’t hold on too tightly - it’s a balancing act. (Another song just popped in my head - Hold on Loosely - but don’t let go! 38 Special)

  5. Change your language around it. Instead of “I’ll try to go on that trip,” say “I’m going on that trip.” Get rid of the word try. Remember, our thoughts and beliefs drive our actions!

  6. Be flexible. Life happens. You might take a detour along the way - remember to enjoy the journey wherever it takes you. Do your best.

Sure, people set goals and New Year’s resolutions that they don’t keep. Big deal. At least they give it a shot. If you’re worried about persevering, put reminders on your calendar or around your house right now, to keep you aware of your goal. Write down why it’s important to you (along with the goal) to help you stay motivated towards it. And as always, keep it fun!

Happy New Year everyone - here’s to 2016! Cheers!
